The following criteria are the core, essential aspects of community-engaged learning pedgagy.

• Community-engaged work is an integrated learning component of the course, 通过课程知识的提升和提升. The course provides structured opportunities for 学生 to learn from the experience, 和 academic assessment incorporates learning from community experience.  This does not mean that the community-engaged component needs to be graded separately, but that it informs 学生' learning on which they will ultimately be assessed.

Still not sure if the class you teach is community-engaged learning? 问自己下面的问题.  Please note that the spirit of the tag is capturing 和 sharing courses taught with a community-engaged orientation to teaching 和 learning.  It is about identifying examples 和 stories of efforts to ensure higher education has a public purpose, 培养学生成为积极参与的公民, 并连接学术理论和现实世界的实践. It is not about gate-keeping courses based on the ticking off of checkboxes.  

√ Do 学生 in my course engage with 校园以外的社区?  这可以是直接的交互作用.g. leaving campus 和 interacting with community members in-person) or indirect engagement (e.g. 完成一个社区组织的项目).  This does not need to be a local community, though we encourage local engagement.  This can be other geographic communities domestic or international, 以及身份群体, 共同的经验或关切, 以及网络社区.

√ Did 学生 learn course-related disciplinary knowledge or skills 从社区经验，任务或项目?  Community-engaged learning is an evidence-based pedagogy that has been demonstrated to enrich 学生' learning, 并且应该有明确的与课程内容相关的学习目标.  Engaging in community experiences 或项目s unrelated to the subject matter toward other goals (student bonding, 为了好玩, 等.) is a worthy pursuit, but would not be considered community-engaged learning.
